Board Member Roles & Responsibilities
Generally, the board of directors is made up of 5 homeowners who volunteer their time to take fiduciary responsibility for the community. Like our US elected officials, board members are elected to specific terms and vote on decisions affecting the community. Specific guidelines for your association board of directors is set in the association's CC&Rs and Bylaws. A general description of board member roles & responsibilities by office is included below:
- President - this role has leadership responsibilities for the board. The President is a very active member of the board, they facilitate all meetings, provide their input on decisions affecting the community, and act as the main point of contact with the Community Manager.
- Vice President - this role takes on the role of President when the President is absent. They can also lead a committee, or be in charge of special projects like updating Rules & Regulations, creating newsletters, or a special enforcement task force.
- Secretary - this role is primarily responsible for taking notes during the meetings and publishing the official meeting minutes. Like the other roles, the Secretary also provides their input on decisions affecting the community.
- Treasurer - this role is primarily responsible for reviewing the association financials, delivering financial reports during meetings, reviewing vendor invoices, and bringing forward any discrepancies in the financial statements. If desired, the Treasurer can have a more active role by approving payments and signing checks, but this is usually completed by the Community Manager. Like the other roles, the Treasurer also provides their input on decisions affecting the community.
- Member-At-Large/Committee Leader - this role isn't as clear cut as the other roles, so it can function however the board of directors desires. The Member can lead a committee, be in charge of special projects like updating Rules & Regulations, creating newsletters, or lead a special enforcement task force. Like the other roles, the Member also provides their input on decisions affecting the community.
